S.A.D Makes Happy Endings......

Success Stories 2

"Tiny Tim"

Clydesdale Yearling Colt

Adopted on June 9, 05 by Julia and Kevin of Loretto, Ontario.

* R.I.P. Oct. 23 2005*

God speed little one.

We were contacted by breeders about Tiny Tim, a Clydesdale that was born with a curved spine, making his back “humped”.  They heard about us and had hoped that we could help him find a home so he could live out his years as a companion.  We went out to see him and fell in love with him the moment we saw him.   We didn’t hesitate taking him in.

Cause of his deformity, we didn’t know if we could ever find him a home, so we made a commitment to him that we would give him a home here, where he would be loved and accepted just the way he was for all his years………but amazingly, shortly after his arrival, we were contacted by a very loving family.   They saw the wonderful boy Tiny Tim was and not his deformity.

Tiny Tim will always have a special place in our hearts.  As with all our rescues, our gates will always be open should he ever need to come back.   We are very happy that he has found a home that will love him for who he is.  He deserved it.

Tiny Tim’s story is a little reminder that SAD not only helps horses, but also assists their loving families by giving them more options for hard to place horses.

"Dolly"

(Formerly Jade)

Clyde/TB Cross Mare

Adopted on June 18 05 by Janna and family of Cambridge, Ontario.

Dolly arrived at SAD with her mind made up about people.  Cause of her past life, humans symbolized 2 things to her.......work and punishment.  We knew there was a horse in there that could love people, we just had to bring it out of her and convince her that not all humans are the same.

Through Natural Horsemanship and "join up", after one session, her views of people drastically changed and she became a different horse.  She was open to people and welcoming of our positive interaction with her.

Dolly arrived here aloof, did not want human attention and head shy.  She left here a calm, willing, loving and attentive towards us and the headshyness seemed to disappear.

Dolly was a challenge at first, but that is just one of the many things we do here.  Take a horse from a bad situation, rehabilitate it's mind or it's body, and start them out on a new, happy life with a different outlook.

Dolly, much more relaxed - one day before adoption.  June 17 05

"Dutchess"

Aged Belgian Mare

Adopted on July 16 2005 by Paul and Linda of Cavan, Ontario.

Dutchess was sent to a meat auction after being a loyal plough horse all her life.  The farmer that brought her in was fond of her, however she was too old to be useful to him anymore, therefore, he did what he felt was his only option.    He obviously had never heard of S.A.D. and what we do here.  She did not deserve to be sent for meat, she had so much life in her and so much to offer a family.

Dutchess is the kindest, gentles soul, a true "Gentle Giant".  She had been handled roughly, which made her a bit shy with strangers, however someone must have treated her nice, as she was able to open up and trust once here at the rescue.   We loved her each and every day, and the shyness faded once she knew our touch was not going to hurt.

Her first love is children, and we had hoped that a forever home with children would come along.   We knew that if she could choose her own home, that is what she would want.

Well, thankfully, a wonderful family came along,  and now she is in a home where “working” consists of being led around with a 5 year old girl on her back….a little girl that just adores her.  She is truly “home” now.

Congratulations, Dutchess!!!!!

"Spice"

4 Year old Reg. Clydesdale mare in foal

Adopted on Oct. 4 2005 by Darolyn and family of Lindsay, Ontario.

Spice, day of arrival at S.A.D

Spice was sent to auction while in foal, apparently cause her owner was getting out of Clydesdales.  Cause a large scar on her leg, the owner felt no one would want a horse with such a large imperfection.  Well……….there was a place for her here and there was definitely a forever home for her!

She arrived here depressed and felt unwanted and disposed of.  But in just a few days, her spirits lifted and she held her head high again!

Spice was one of the most affectionate horses we have ever had here at the rescue.  Within hours of being here, she started to groom me back, even when I would just pat her lightly.  She was the kind of horse that could be led around without a lead rope after just meeting you once.

Before going to her new home, it was confirmed by our Vet that Spice was in fact pregnant.  She will foal late spring, 2006, and we will update her success story with any news.

Congratulations to Spice’s new family who will be giving her and her foal a very loving forever home!!!

We send our sincere thanks to Lori Huff for her sponsorship of Spice.

Spice, just before adoption.....

Spice (now called Angel) and her filly "Angel's Fantasia" aka "Fancypants"

"Thor and Zeus"

20 year old Percheron and 18 year old Brabant Geldings

Adopted on Oct. 23 2005 by Adrienne and Norm of Flinton, Ont.

Zeus and Thor, day of arrival at S.A.D

Zeus and Thor narrowly escaped going for meat after being sent to Kitchener after serving their owner on a Mennonite farm since they were little.  They had been his loyal ploughing team their entire life and had never, ever been separated.   We had a chance to speak with the man who brought them in, who was very fond of them.  He said they worked hard for him, but had younger horses now ready to take over.

After the auction was over, we were were asked by some of the "regulars" there, "So what are you going to do with that old team".  Our responce : "Retire them!"  Of course, they were puzzled.  To them, old draft horses are useless and should be disposed of - even if still in good health.  This is harsh, but it is how they are viewed by like-minded people.

They arrived here at S.A.D brave and ready for what was to happen next.  Always obedient, calm and wanting to please.   Thor, the shyer one of the 2, hid behind Zeus at first, but in a couple days was just as social as Zeus.

These boys had the tightest bond we have ever seen in two horses.  Cause of this, we made a decision to adopt them out together and not separate them, ever.   We have heard that horses are 10 times more social than humans.  Thor and Zeus are living proof of this!!

These 2 do it all together......eat, lay down at night, even share the same grain bucket.   They are inseparable.  As their adoptive mom describes them "they are 2 horses with one soul".

They were ridden for the first time, here at the rescue, and took to it naturally and really seemed to enjoy it.

They now live happily on endless pastures with their loving adoptive family, perhaps the occasional ride together, but mainly they are being loved and fussed over and just allowed to be horses.

Our sincere thanks goes out to Lori and Bill of Beeton Ont., for their sponsorship, which helped enable us to bring these boys to safety and give them the Veterinary treatment they needed while here.

Zeus and Thor being ridden for the first time!

"Chance"

2 year old Clyde cross Gelding

Adopted on Nov. 05 2005 by Julie, Lisa and Brian of Napanee, Ont.

Chance, day of arrival at S.A.D

Chance is a wonderful little guy who’s original owners either lost interest or just stopped caring for unknown reasons.  Upon arrival at SAD, his halter was tight and areas on his cheeks were rubbed raw from it, his feet had not been handled or trimmed in a very long time, he was wormy, underweight and depressed.  But thankfully, bouncing back from the neglect and then disposal came easy to him and in no time at all, Chance turned into a happy guy with so much life and affection to give.

During his 4 months with us, Chance became part of the family and we got to know him so well.  While with us, he learned to accept the bit, saddle, and even ground drive!  He loved to learn new things and really did everything to please.  What a special boy he is!

After much searching, his ideal forever home finally found him.  He now resides with his Donkey friend, who, like Chance, had been thrown away to the auction by his past owners.   We hear they run and play  together a lot, and we wish them many, many years of happiness together.

Chance and friend their last day here.

Chance in his new home all grown up!! WOW!!

"Cody"

6 year old Reg. Clydesdale Gelding

Adopted on Nov. 09, 2005 by Janice of Holland Landing, Ont.

Cody, Day of arrival at S.A.D.

Cody is a very sweet boy who was sent to Kitchener for reasons we will never know.  He is a  big boy with an even bigger heart.  Never, ever stepping a foot wrong and always happy to receive praise and attention.

He was underweight when he arrived, because at the young age of 6, he had hooks forming on his teeth and could not chew well.  After his teeth were floated, he gained quickly and could finally chew his food without any discomfort.

His very loving forever home came along very soon and brought him into their lives without hesitation.  It really was love at first sight.   He is now part of their family of Wolfhounds and has just been joined by another draft in need, a Percheron named Bobby.   Both boys will be riding horses and there will certainly be some heads turning when the time comes!

Cody is now in a place where he will never have to worry about being abandoned, disposed of, starved, beaten or neglected.  He now has everything a horse should have, but so many do not.

We would like to send a special Thank you out to Karen Root for her sponsorship of Cody.

Congratulations Janice, David and Cody, we are so glad for you!!!

  "Naomi"

9 year old Reg. Percheron Mare

Adopted on Jan. 01, 2006 by Monica of Toronto, Ont.

Naomi, day of arrival at S.A.D.

Naomi was taken out of her home of 9 years and shipped for meat.  Cause she was a papered mare, we were able to track down some info on her past and found that she had one owner since she was a baby.

What a shock it was for her to be taken away from her herd, the only herd she know her whole life and sent to such a horrible place like a meat auction.

Naomi faced all of this bravely and with time opened up to us and the other horses here.  What she showed us and how she changed……….from being guarded and untrusting to open and welcoming was amazing.

She turned out to be a very loving mare, who welcomed the love and care we and those that met her offered.  She is making her new mom very happy and we wish them many year of happiness together.

Special thanks goes out to Julie Wright for sponsoring Naomi.

Naomi, just a few weeks later, the day she went to her new home.

"Honey"

Aprox. 2 year old Belgian Filly

Adopted on Jan. 07, 2006 by Marilyn of Princeton, Ont.

Honey with Naomi

Honey had just arrived at SAD, when her soon-to-be new mom contacted us looking for her first rescued draft horse to bring into her life and her existing horsey family.

We told her about a filly who had just arrived and how she had become unwanted and sent to auction, we feel,  because she was badly toed out.  But Honey was such a happy filly and thought she was fine and loveable the way she was...... so did we and so did her new mom!

In a world where people are accepted for their faults, animals don't get nearly the same acceptance.  Just because a horse is not breeding/show quality does not make him or her disposable.  They deserve a chance to live a good life as someone's loved pet, just as Honey is now.

Honey loves people and is such a well behaved filly.  We are so happy she came into our lives and we were able to find her forever home so quickly.

In the years to come, Honey and her new family will be attending their local driving clubs events.  Honey of course will be the centre of attention, and she and her family will be spreading the word about SAD and the happy endings we make for unwanted horse.
Way to go Honey!

  " Joe"
Aprox. 10 year old Clydesdale Gelding

Adopted on Jan. 15, 2006 by Susan of Beeton Ont.

Joe, day of arrival at SAD.

Joe arrived here fearful of fast hand movements and unsure of us, but in very little time completely let his guard down and gave us 100% of his trust.   Once the trust was given, he never took it back.   Both Henry and I bonded to him, he was so easy to love and snuggle up to.

While here, he always looked forward to seeing us and the people that came to meet him, always approachable and willing to do whatever was asked of him.  We showed him the kindness that he deserved and he returned it to us in so many ways.

When his new mom came to meet him, she was very impressed by him, his calmness around people and strangers and how lovable and quiet he was.   She knew he was the one for her and promised to give him the life he had always deserved and never, ever make him feel unwanted again.

We wish his new mom all the success in the world with this very big hearted boy and that they become best friends for life.

Joe and his good friend, Henry just before adoption.

"Holly"

Aprox. 5 year old Clyde/Hackney Mare

Adopted on Feb. 02, 2006 by Dr. Linda and Stan of Rosseau, Ontario.

Holly, day of arrival at SAD

Holly was a Mennonite buggy horse prior to being shipped for meat.

Thankfully, her career was short and because of this, she arrived here sound, in good condition and had a good attitude towards people.

We really enjoyed our time with Holly while here, she is stunning, but also she has the personality to go with it.

Holly now has a new life that is very different than what she is used to.  Less work and more play!!!!

She has years of happiness ahead of her and with training she will become a trail horse, which we know she will really enjoy.

Special thanks goes out to Jolene Lambert for her sponsorship of Holly!

Holly, the day she went to her new home.
